What Does it Mean to be Assessment-Centered?

  • Assessment is the way we determine what our students have learned and we use assessment to improve our teaching.
  • Students need opportunities to display their thinking and we can serve as a guide while they reflect on the learning process.
  • To be assessment centered, we must frequently and consistently evaluate what our students are learning. Ultimately, there is a metacognition component that involves the student directly in thinking about thinking – how do I learn, when do I learn best, etc. What things can the student do to improve acquisition of learning? What things can the teacher do to ensure students are taking responsibility in the learning process? to improve teaching? These are some goals of assessment.
  • There are many ways to assess student learning and teacher efficiency.
    • With assessment, we can correct misconceptions.
    • With assessment we can determine at which level our students are performing – if our students have mastered the concepts and are able to progress through learning stages, the teacher must be vigilant and give other opportunities for students to use information at these higher levels of thinking.
    • Assessment in an informal manner allows the teacher to know the prior knowledge of students.
  • It is our goal to share the responsibility of assessment with our students. This is invaluable.
    • Learning is much more than the score on the final exam.
    • When students know how they are learning, are making connections, are scoring themselves (informally and formally) and taking an interest in their learning in ways other than simply memorizing or passing the test, the students will benefit greatly.
  • The way we assess our students is directly related to the learning objectives.
An example of an assessment activity would be to construct a quiz that review the content of the unit. Using a program called Quizdom, each student gets a controller in which they choose an answer they feel is the correct answer for that question. This program registers which student is using which remote and shows which answers they got right or wrong, it also breaks up what percent of the class answered what questions correctly.
